Health care under attack! As we all know Health Care is being reviewed by the Supreme Court and could be struck down. That would be a very bad thing
for millions of Americans, yet if it does turn out that the Supreme Court does rule it illegal, then maybe would be the
perfect time for "single payer" or Medicare for all! We certainly think so. At any rate country is certainly following
the battle closely.
Will soon be posting some travel and RV links and stories in the coming weeks.
Below are some of our favorite links, organizations, and issues we are involved in:
Southern Poverty Law Center is working hard
to protect the rights of all in the U.S.. Please visit their site on the web and learn what they are all about. Much
of their work has helped every American with civil rights.
Planned Parenthood protects the
reproductive rights of all women, and assists men as well with health issues. Best organization so far battling against
the outright assault on women by the Republican and other right wing groups. Planned Parenthood is fighting the good
fight against the “Christian Taliban” who desire to roll back women's rights to the dark ages. We cannot
let them win and reverse the hard earned rights of women in this country and around the globe. A woman is the only one
who has a right to control what is done with her own body. As Margaret Sanger said “A woman can never be free
until she can decide whether she will or will not be a Mother.”
Moveon.org Moveon.org is our nation's prominent
Progressive political group. We are active members and if you are progressive in your politics you should consider
joining as well. Cost nothing to join and you can easily volunteer in many ways. Your level of commitment can be done
on your level and schedule and there is need for every little assistance from funding, to phone calls, active protests,
or upper level community event planning or hosting.
The immigration issue has certainly heated up with states such as Alabama and Arizona passing what amounts to un-American style
"show me your papers" laws. We stand united with immigrant rights groups in opposition to laws that seek to repress and
that are counter to what American stands for. This nation was built with immigrants alongside the Native populations who
beat all the rest of us here and there is a strong need for folks willing to do jobs that the rest of us don't want
to do. Doubt very seriously many of us would want to pick fruit and vegetables even if the wages were higher, and
the many other jobs held by immigrants are seldom in serious conflict with the rest of us.
True immigration reform requires a broad range of issues be dealt with. It is not as simple as just closing or opening a
border. Verification, registration, amnesty for many, and for more affluent jobs that citizens "have" been losing such as
certain construction work, some sort of system which requires employers to rehire American workers first. Still even with
such requirements it is clear to the employers that they need immigrant labor to fill the void and provide the services
as in most of the jobs that immigrants seem to work at, we Americans do not want to do this work, or certainly not for
the wages. We have the choice of closing the border and putting Americans picking fruits, and raise the wages. Can we
really afford to pay 5 bucks for an apple though, or would we want to???
Laws such as the dreadful one in Alabama are a result of a backlash against immigration from combinations of racism,
poverty, and overall perception that we are somehow being "invaded" and that our culture will change. Our culture has always
been changing. It is part of what makes this America.
When I was young most of the local grocers were Italian and while they carried all the usual "American" foods, they also
specialized in Italian ethnic foods. This was in S. Louisiana. They ran efficient and friendly businesses and helped introduce
the rest of us to Italian cooking and food and ingredients. Now as times have changed, you are likely to find a person of
either Middle East, or Asian descent (usually Vietnamese) running the smaller neighborhood grocers here in the same town and
I see that as a good thing. They haven't "displaced" the previous folks as those families have either expanded further up the
grocery food chain, or branched into some other aspect of work as decades have passed. The new influx of owners has added a
variety to our culture that has for a long time thought of Italian and other ethnic foods as "normal" yet now is learning to also
love Gyros, Vietnamese foods, Pita bread, Hummus, and other wonderful foods from other cultures.
The fact that we are known as a "melting pot" does not requires that we be run through a blender until we are all homogenized into
an indistinguishable soup. We can all retain our own identities, but with the addition of new traditions, foods, celebrations, sports
and overall rise in quality of life and appreciated understanding of our fellow human beings.
Occupy Wall Street has now grown into a worldwide and certainly nationwide movement now. Clearly the backlash against it from
the authorities working for the corporations is showing the American public, and the rest of the world, just how much we have lost our
freedoms to the corporate interests and rich bankers and brokers who are in control of the system. System needs to
change and the money and control out of the hands of the greedy who use it for control over the rest of humanity.
Join a progressive group in your area and get involved.
More to come later.
